Shortlisted for the Fiona Colley Trainee of the Year Award at the Springboard Awards for Excellence 2024

“Before enrolling in Springboard, I had faced challenges with both school and college. Despite initially studying hairdressing in college, it didn’t work out for me. When my Work Coach at the Job Centre mentioned Springboard, I was intrigued by the idea of trying something new. However, my lack of confidence and anxiety about meeting new people made me hesitant.

On the first day of the course, I was extremely nervous and almost didn’t enter the building. Thankfully, another trainee outside spoke to me outside and eased my worries. Working in a small team was beneficial, and the hands-on training and activities significantly boosted my confidence and communication skills. I loved working with my course peers and we became almost like a family.

By the end of the three-week course, I felt more capable, less anxious, and significantly more self-assured. I pushed myself to participate more actively, socialise, and engage in discussions. My fellow trainees also noticed a positive transformation in me, acknowledging my increased involvement.

Following the course, Springboard and the Royal Albert Dock Charitable Foundation arranged a work placement for me at the Holiday Inn on the Albert Dock. Although initially nervous, I quickly settled into the placement, enjoying learning about the hotel industry and interacting with guests. Subsequently, I was interviewed and successfully secured a part-time role as a Guest Services Assistant.

Seven months into my position, I have increased my hours and transitioned to full-time employment. Working in hotels is demanding, but I feel like I have found my place. I love my job because of the diverse tasks, interactions with guests, and the sense of belonging at Holiday Inn. While I have much to learn, I see a promising future for myself in the hotel industry.

I am honoured to be nominated for the Fiona Colley Trainee of the Year Award at the Springboard Awards for Excellence 2024. I’m looking forward to going to London for the award ceremony and I wish the best of luck to everyone who has been nominated!”
