BaxterStorey and Diageo back Springboard to 2022 as official partners

BaxterStorey and Diageo are among a number of major hospitality brands to show their support for Springboard to 2022 after signing up as official partners.
Springboard to 2022 will see hospitality charity, Springboard, support 10,000 young people into careers in hospitality, leisure or tourism over the next 19 months, in association with headline partner Savoy Educational Trust.
Alastair Storey, chairman of BaxterStorey parent company Westbury Street Holdings and Springboard, said it was vital that hospitality businesses leant their support to tackle the industry’s long-term staffing crisis and ensure it has a sufficient pipeline of young talent coming through.
“As hospitality reopens, our industry has a big job to attract more young people to address the skills gap. That is why Springboard to 2022 is so important. The pandemic and Brexit have seen us lose some great talent from across the sector and it’s imperative we showcase hospitality and it’s career prospects.
“Our role is to rebuild our sector again by creating job opportunities and providing the training and development that young people deserve. As an industry, we must demonstrate our commitment to the future of young people in this country. In time, my ambition is to show the maturing of our industry into being a key player in the British economy, with tourism and hospitality regarded as one of the top priorities.”
Nicola Reid, Learning for Life Programme Manager for GB and Europe at Diageo, added: “As delivery partners of Diageo’s Learning for Life programme, Springboard has already helped thousands of hospitality staff across the country and we’re proud to continue to nurture industry talent together to 2022.
“The training Springboard provides not only helps to attract and keep brilliant people into our hospitality sector, but the other associated benefits of building connections, improving personal confidence and picking up new skills can have a positive impact on the mental wellbeing of the people who make the industry so strong.
“Springboard’s support to deliver Learning for Life programmes has been invaluable and we’re looking forward to continuing to work closely with the team to support even more young people in the wonderful world of hospitality.”
Earlier this month, CH&Co pledged to advertise all entry-level roles through Springboard before any other recruitment platform, which could amount to up to 500 roles over the coming months.
Springboard CEO Chris Gamm said: “As the industry reopens, our trainees are engaged and ready to work and we want to hear from employers able to offer them job opportunities now and in the future.”

CH&CO’s double commitment to Springboard and its ‘Springboard to 2022’ programme

CH&CO has strengthened its support of UK hospitality charity, Springboard, and its new initiative ‘Springboard to 2022’ with two clear commitments. The independent catering and hospitality business has pledged to advertise all its entry level roles with Springboard before advertising externally. It has also signed up to work with Springboard to create jobs through the government’s Kickstart scheme.
‘Springboard to 2022’ is the charity’s industry response to hospitality’s skills deficit and staffing crisis, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic, ensuring a skilled and engaged talent pipeline for when the industry needs it most. The goal is to have 10,000 young people trained and ready for work, in line with the industry’s recovery, by December 2022.
CH&CO has pledged to update its recruitment process to help Springboard realise this goal. Moving forward, all entry level roles across the business – including Gather & Gather, Vacherin and Company of Cooks – will be advertised through Springboard before any other external recruitment platforms.
CH&CO is a diverse hospitality business operating in workplaces, education, healthcare, destinations, venues and events and has the potential to offer a wide variety of exciting opportunities. It is estimated that as the industry reopens, this could equate to more than 560 roles over the coming months.
In addition, CH&CO has chosen to work with Springboard to generate work placements for young people through the Kickstart scheme. Kickstart is part of the government’s Plan for Jobs strategy to help create jobs for young people at risk of long-term unemployment as companies kickstart their business post Covid-19.
Charlotte Hutchings, Group People Director at CH&CO, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Springboard to support its valuable ‘Springboard to 2022’ programme. The pandemic and lockdowns have caused untold damage to what was an already delicate hospitality talent pool. As an industry, as we rebuild, we all have a responsibility to restore confidence in hospitality as a diverse and progressive career option and to create opportunities and support for the many young people that have been displaced and disillusioned over the past 12 months.
“Working with Springboard, we are proud to be able to pledge that through our updated recruitment process and our engagement with the Kickstart programme, we will play our part in tackling the staffing crisis and regenerating the industry. Investing in people is invaluable to protect the future of our business and the industry. After all, people are what hospitality is all about.”
Chris Gamm, CEO, Springboard, said: “It’s critical that leaders from across our sector come together to aid the long-term recovery of hospitality post-Covid. We’re thrilled to receive further support from our partners CH&CO for our new project ‘Springboard to 2022’, which aims to have 10,000 young people trained and ready for work by December 2022. Through our new initiative we will work towards ensuring a skilled and engaged talent pipeline ready for when the industry needs it most.
“We would like to thank CH&CO for its commitment to support Springboard’s response to the hospitality industry’s massive skills deficit and staffing crisis. It’s collaborations and industry alliances like these that will enable the sector to recover and thrive once more.”
Last chance to register for Springboard’s Virtual Race to Nicaragua!

We are calling on YOU to dust off your walking boots and register to take part in our Virtual Race to Nicaragua by this Friday 30th April!
We’re on the hunt for intrepid adventurers from across the UK who are willing to walk, run, cycle or push the 5,300 miles to Nicaragua, as a team throughout May.
Springboard launched the Virtual Race to Nicaragua earlier this year after postponing our 2020 trek to Nicaragua, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The annual trek, which has previously taken participants to destinations including Nepal, Vietnam and Borneo, has raised several thousand pounds for Springboard, whilst also supporting local community projects as part of each expedition.
This year’s virtual race is being supported by platinum sponsors CH&Co, Nestlé and Lamb Weston.
Amy-Jane Cahalane, Marketing & Events Partner at Springboard UK, said: “We’re absolutely delighted at the response we’ve had to our virtual race so far. We certainly weren’t going to let COVID-19 get in the way of our fundraising efforts, and it’s heart-warming to see so many fantastic organisations and individuals from the hospitality sector rally behind us and help us to raise vital funds for Springboard, including over 25 sponsors.
“With 30-35 members per team, if you don’t have enough members to start a team, individuals can also sign up and be placed in a team with space. The challenge can be broken down to 177 miles per person with a team of 30 on board – that’s just six miles per day. It’s a fantastic opportunity to support the hospitality industry, get fit and have a lot of fun along the way.”
Participating teams will be able to track their progress and collective miles covered using the My Virtual Mission platform.
Registration is £10 per person, which includes a goody bag, an official virtual race t-shirt and the opportunity to earn prizes throughout the month. Each team has pledged to raise £3,000 for Springboard as part of the challenge. Participants can register via www.springboard.uk.net/race.
If you are signing up as an individual, just write ‘assign a team’ in the team name box and we’ll find you a great team to join.
Hospitality employers called on to pledge jobs for Springboard trainees

Springboard is calling on hospitality employers to get in touch about offering job opportunities to its latest cohort of trainees.
Over the past 12 months, 1,917 people across the UK and Ireland completed Springboard’s employability programmes, which equip young and disadvantaged people with careers advice, life skills and industry qualifications to launch their careers in hospitality, leisure, and tourism.
Springboard CEO Chris Gamm said: “We typically expect to get 65%-70% of trainees completing our employability programmes into work, but because of the impact of the Covid pandemic on hospitality, the jobs haven’t been there. But as the industry reopens, our trainees are engaged and ready to work and we want to hear from employers able to offer them job opportunities now and in the future.”
“Our trainees typically remain with their first employer for 18-24 months, nearly twice as long as the industry average, providing businesses with a stable workforce as we come out of this extremely challenging period.”
Over the next 20 months, Springboard will be supporting 10,000 young people into work through its Springboard to 2022 programme, in partnership with lead partner Savoy Educational Trust and official partners BaxterStorey and Diageo.
Leading hospitality businesses have already pledged a combined 1,000 jobs to Springboard to 2022, many through the government’s Kickstart scheme, including: IHG, Compass, BaxterStorey, Nando’s, Hilton, CH&Co, D&D London, Dorchester Collection, Village Hotels, Rockfish and Turtle Bay.

Kelly Johnstone has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer among of number of staffing changes at Springboard.
Johnstone joined the hospitality charity in August 2014 and has held a number of senior roles, most recently as Lead Operations for Scotland, Midlands, North England and Ireland.
She will be responsible for overseeing operational delivery across the UK and Ireland of the organisation’s Springboard to 2022 project, training and supporting 10,000 young people into work in hospitality in line with the industry’s recovery by 2022.
“I am over the moon to take up this new role at Springboard,” she said. “There has never been a better time to support hospitality, leisure and tourism businesses to get back on their feet. Over the last seven years, I have seen the important work my team do and having a national role will allow me to drive consistency and a ‘one team’ approach across our key strategic priorities.
This past year, combined with Brexit, presents a labour challenge for the industry and we have ambitious plans to support this by showcasing the diverse roles across all areas of the sectors to young people in education, while also supporting unemployed people of all ages into sustained employment. We have an amazing team, really supportive board of trustees, wonderful partners and inspirational trainees ready to Springboard into 2022.”
This is one of a number of changes linked to the delivery of Springboard to 2022, which is the charity’s most ambitious ever project and will see a significant increase in its training delivery. Other new roles include:

Advisory Boards supporting Springboard into success
Springboard has been supported by committees and advisory boards for many years. Our Advisory Members are responsible for helping to support the strategic vision, direction, goals and quality of service delivery of the Charity (and its trading subsidiary, Springboard UK).
Although the day-to-day management activity is carried out by the executive team, the role of an Advisory Board Member is to help and support where possible, ensuring that Springboard’s programme of work is relevant to the needs of both its charity beneficiaries and the hospitality, leisure, and tourism industry. They are key to also ensuring that that appropriate partnerships are in place and that our activities are implemented to best effect, in line with Springboard’s strategic priorities and with the adequate funding / resources to support our work.
Springboard’s longest serving advisory board is our Scotland one. When Kelly Johnstone, COO, joined the organisation in 2014, the Scotland Springboard Advisory board were already an established board, made up of cross-sector industry members across education, government, skills development Scotland, industry bodies and training providers. This board has gone from strength to strength.
Kelly says “It was a vision of mine to set up more Advisory Boards across the UK, inline with the programme of works and to mimic the wealth of experience and knowledge harnessed in our Scotland Advisory Board”
In 2019, Kelly established the North West England Advisory board, which had a hugely successful first year. Then, in 2020, hit with the pandemic and lockdowns, we entered into the world of virtual meetings. During this transformational period of time, many things changed and it gave Springboard an opportunity to visit our advisory board membership.
Working closely with the Chair of the Scotland Advisory Board, Paul Wilson of Xpress Recruitment, Kelly reviewed any current skills gaps in the board, which led to the creation of an advert to recruit new board members. We were overwhelmed with the applications, which also galvanised the Wales and Northern Ireland boards to be established.
In January this year David Walker the Chair of the North West England Advisory Board handed the reigns over to Adrian Ellis of The Lowry, after helping to set up the board.
Kelly added “I am really looking forward to working with Adrian Ellis and David Steel, our Deputy Chair.”
In the last 12 months, we have also reignited the London Advisory board and our new Chair, Francisco Macedo of Cliveden House, is supporting Bryan Grierson, Operations Director across London.
Bryan said: “We are currently welcoming our new members and are encouraging more to join. Membership on a board is a great opportunity and experience to those in the sector who want to support development and growth”
Michael Grove of Hotstats is Chair of the Wales Advisory Board and Lisa Steele is the Chair of the Northern Ireland Advisory Board.
Our five highly experienced Chairs have committed to meeting regularly outside their regional meetings, which will drive a consistent approach across the UK.
In the last 12 months, we have put lot of work into developing our advisory boards and members to support the exciting projects that Springboard has planned for the next 18 months. Springboard to 2022 has ambitious plans to get 10,000 young people into the sector and the advisory board members will all play their part in making this happen.
To enquire about joining an advisory board please get in touch with Kelly Johnstone (kellyj@springboarduk.org.uk)
See below what some of our advisory board members have said:
“Having been previously involved with Springboard and understanding the superb work the Charity does in promoting the hospitality, leisure and tourism sector as an exciting and rewarding place to work and have a career, it was a great honour to be given the opportunity to take on the position of Chairman for the Scottish Regional Board of The Springboard Charity”
Paul Wilson, Scotland Chair & Managing Director, Xpress Recruitment
“I am delighted to be Chairing the North West Board for Springboard and look forward to the opportunities and challenges in meeting our objectives for this year and the 2022 targets . There has never been a better time to enter and engage in our industry and we look forward to welcoming and encouraging new talent to our amazing industry”
Adrian Ellis, North-West Chair & General Manager, The Lowry Hotel
“I am absolutely thrilled and humbled to take up the position of the Chair of Springboard NI Advisory Board. As the fourth generation in hospitality, it is in my blood. My love for this business has never waivered as the diversity and opportunities are endless and the more we can encourage people to see that the better”
Lisa Steele, Northern Ireland Chair & Hotel Consultant at Steele Hospitality
Michael is Chief Operating Officer at Hotstats. Hotstats provide monthly P&L benchmarking & market Insight for the hotel industry. Collecting monthly detailed financial data from hotels worldwide from over 100 brands and independent hotels, Hotstats provide over 550 different KPIs covering all operating revenues, payroll, expenses, cost of sales and ultimately departmental and total hotel profitability.
Prior to joining Hotstats, Michael held multiple operational & financial roles at hotel and corporate level, over 16 years and is a regular guest lecturer at universities & hotel schools around the world.
Michael Grove, Wales Chair & Chief Operating Officer, Hotstats
“I am honoured to be Chairing the London Advisory Board after a couple of years as a board member and look forward to driving the Springboard Initiatives with my fellow Board Members, whilst promoting the Hospitality, Leisure, and Tourism industry as a remarkable Career Choice and look forward to mentor young talent to the industry I love.”
Francisco Macedo, London Chair, Group Operations Director & Cliveden General Manager, Iconic Luxury Hotels
