Trip Overview

On the 24th of March, you’ll fly from London Heathrow to Brunei, arriving at Kota Kinabalu at 16:30 the following day. You’ll then transfer to the Adventure Lodge, and be given an expedition orientation with your dinner.

The next morning, you’ll depart early from the airport, and driven to Poring Hot Springs, located at the foot of Mt Kinabalu. There you’ll enjoy learning about the amazing biodiversity of the rainforest on the canopy walkway. Afterwards, you’ll settle into the cosy guesthouses and prepare for the trek up Mt Kinabalu. Ascending through the diverse forest, the habitat of many species of orchids, pitcher plants, birds, insects and butterflies, you’ll arrive at Laban Rata and take a rest for the night. You’ll wake before sun-up the following morning, hiking to the peak by torch light. The effort will be worth it though, as you watch the sun rise over the highest point in Borneo – 4,095m.

You will then begin your point-to-point trek, across a combination of primary and secondary jungle, flourishing ecosystems, rich tropical lowlands and hilly rainforest to reach the remote jungle community of Kampung Tagalapang. Here you will spend the next three days working alongside the local community to build a well-needed school for the villagers. At the end of the project, you will canoe your way to Kota Kinabalu for our celebratory dinner and some relaxation time before flying back to the UK.

Community Project

Possibly the biggest difference you'll make will be to the people of Borneo. Your three days in the village of Dunsun Sangai won't be a cakewalk - you'll be building, plastering and labouring to give the villagers the chance to go to school and recieve a formal education. The work is tough, but it's definitely rewarding.

Although the villagers are proud of their eco-friendly, self-sufficient home, they want the youngest generation to have access to education, and to be able to experience the outside world. Due to the remote nature of the village, access to formal education has been nearly impossible - with the closest school over 240 kilometres away. This would mean that, in order to recieve an education, the young people of Dunsun Sungai would have to board there during the week - which most often is not an option.

Your painstaking efforts will give the villagers the knowledge they need to thrive. In additional to physical work, Trekkers choose to personally donate educational resources and sporting equipment to the people in the village.

“This has truly been the trip of the lifetime, it’s been absolutely incredible. Some of the biggest highlights have been waking up and seeing Everest outside of my tent, and coming here to this school, and seeing these children and what we’re able to do for them and how we can support them with their future education.” - Chanelle Gale, The Savoy Hotel, TREK Nepal 2016

Making a Difference

Back in the UK, your time, energy and hard-work will make a huge difference to people's lives - helping young people and those with barriers to employment to break through their difficulties, and find rewarding and meaningful work within the hospitality industry. Every penny earned will go directly into our employability programmes, helping those who need a little assistance on starting their career. People such as:

Ali

Ali Sheik Chand Photo

After 6 months of unemployment, Ali was feeling pressure to provide for his family, and felt desperate about his future. He then contacted Springboard, who put him on the Hospitality Future’s programme. He sailed through the course, and quickly discovered how rewarding hospitality can be. Ali is now flourishing, working in high-end hotels and renowned restaurants, and is now building a secure and rewarding career.

Training

This is a moderate-level challenge. You will trek through jungle, canoe down rivers and climb over 4,000m of mountain - as well as carry things, build and plaster - so preperatory training is a must, and reasonable levels of fitness are required.

If you're already in great shape, then keep up the good work. If you need to improve at all, we'll be here to support you as you challenge yourself. Training packs and guidance will be released soon to help you in your preparation.

Corporate Benefits

Springboard's TREK also benefits your organisation. It helps:

Firstly, we support a wonderful charity with the great work it does in helping disadvantaged people into the world of work via career opportunities in hospitality. Secondly, our trekkers gain so much from the experience, developing a greater understanding of teamwork, planning, tenacity, building relationships and putting something back into society. They have all returned to work hugely enthused and motivated by what they have achieved and justifiably proud of their achievements." - Andrew Merrett, CH&Co Group

“Bidfood have been proud supporters of the Springboard Trek ever since the first journey across to China. The Springboard Trek offers us a truly unique opportunity to support three key objectives: raising money for Springboard, developing and rewarding our employees, and making a positive impact within developing countries and to our environment. I know that the financial support raised through TREK is key to a charity that makes such an amazing contribution, and it is great that we are able to couple this with giving our employees such a life affirming experience, alongside the chance to learn new cultures and meet like-minded people from the industry.” - Tim Adams, Bidfood
