Camden Society Employment Platform Day - 10th March 2015
I attended and organised the Camden Society Employment Platform day on Tuesday 10th March 2015 hosted by Unity Kitchen Timber Lodge to encourage hospitality employers to offer placements and jobs for people with learning disabilities.
The Camden Society was founded in 1966 by parents and carers to campaign for the right of people with learning disabilities to live in the community. They have 50 years’ experience of supporting people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and autism to live the lives they choose. Through provision of supported living, day opportunities, community and leisure services, training and employment.
Stuart’s journey began as a demotivated and uninspired NEET in August 2012. After dropping into the job centre on the off chance he was made aware through his advisor that Premier Inn were holding a recruitment day for a new Premier Inn opening in Halifax Town Centre.
Jumping at the opportunity, Stuart attended the day and within a month was told that he had successfully secured the role of Reception Team Member. That was the start of his journey.
What prepared you for work in hospitality?
I have always had a great interest in food, sport and health. When I left school (in Australia) I travelled for a few years and then decided to turn my passion into my career and go to university in London, one of the best places to study in the world. After 3 years of full time university and working part time on a helpdesk I graduated with a joint honours degree in Human Nutrition & Sports Science.
